I. Theme - Surface Design
-- In terms of using the properties of different slips of different clay to change the appearance of projects.
-- Using glazes to enhance the size of the project (i.e. using brighter glazes to make the project look bigger)
-- Using the positive and negative space aspect of projects.
II. What
-- My Bowl that I painted porcelain slip on
-- A pitcher that I am going to paint on porcelain slip
-- A lidded project
III. How
-- With my bowl, I already made it with the techniques that I acquired in making bowls. The bowl came out really nice. It shows how the slip makes the project white in some areas. And the inside is brighter than I was imagining it to come out.
-- The pitcher is just a vase shape with a little spout/lip on the top of it. It is going to a be a little wetter than the leather hard state for when I paint porecelain on it. I am experiementing with different stages of the clay procees and painting the slip on it.
-- With the lidded project, I am going to make the lid a flat lid and add a different type of handle to the stop to take off the lid.
VI. Why
-- The reason why I chose this theme is because different types of clay definitely have different properties on how the act when they are being thrown on the wheel, when they are being sculpted, and when they being glazed. Several of my projects are made out of porcelian clay which, when fired, comes out a bright white. A good portion of my projects - but not as many - are made out of regular clay. I when back to regular, Vashon White clay because I started to loose my touch with the porcelin and because I like the structure that the regaular clay has. But when glazing the projects, the regular clay absorbs the color causing the color to be more dull and dark, while porcelain clay is white, it reflects the color, making it brighter. I plan to use those properties to show off the surfaces of different types of clay with different projects.
V. Conclusion
-- Although I have worked with only Vashon White clay and Dove porcelain, I have come to find ways to utilize the properties of them to create projects that give different visuals to them. The fact that clay can be transformed into so many different textures that can be applied to the project itself, make the projects so different and so dimensional.
