This semester for my theme, I chose to do Surface design. I have really adapted to this theme since I began throwing different types of clay. The fact that projects can be so dull and flat, forced me to see what I can do to give them more personality.
My projects that I have done that really exhibit surface design are mostly thrown out of porcelain. Very few of my projects that are related are made out of regular clay. However, I have figured out a way to utilize the properties of different clays to help me show the surface design.
Most all of my projects have a design that mimics a swirl. With the porcelain projects, because of the properties of it, the glaze ran, making an abstract pixel type design. Then, I tried doing the same design on regular, Vashon White clay, and the glaze didn't run like it did on the porcelain. The made me think about the properties of different clays and how glazes are affected by them.
Now, how cheesy this may sound, I didn't choose this theme, the theme chose me. I was going towards a different theme and that didn't turn out so I just decided to do this theme.
